We believe there is one God, the only God, who created the universe, and that He created the beauty around us for mankind to enjoy. Man's chief end is indeed to glorify God. Therefore, the universe has meaning in that it was created for man to enjoy and for man to glorify and worship God.

The problem with this picture is that man has fallen from his proper relationship with the Creator of the universe. Mankind may be in awe of the universe and its beauty, but he is actually at war with God the Creator. He may enjoy the beauty of the universe, paint it on canvas, write songs about it, but never can he truly glorify God with it because he is in a wrong relationship with God. Romans 3:23 says:

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.

Romans 8:7-8 says:

Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

So you can see that man in his natural state is an enemy of God. Romans 6:23 says:

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Here is where the Light of the world enters. Jesus, given by the grace of God to redeem mankind back from the fallen state he is in, back to Himself.

"For God so loved the world
that He gave His only begotten
Son, that whosoever believes
in Him shall not perish, but
have everlasting life."
John 3:16

It is the light that intrigues and fascinates the artist. It is the light that reveals the shadow. Jesus said He was the light of the world and that He came so that the world might have light.

"...That (Jesus) was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

But as many as received him, to them
gave he power to become the sons of
God, even to them that believe on his
name."
John 1: 9-12

Christian artists should be even more fascinated by the way light illuminates an object with color or the way light fades as the day ends and bathes the world in an awesome colorful display of the grace of God. We marvel at the light and grace God has given mankind, because of His "great love with which He loved us."

"But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:4-9

Stop for a minute and ask yourself: If Jesus Christ is the only way to be reconciled to God and the only way to know Him and live in His peace, should you not seek Him? Do you know Him? If not, call on the name of Jesus and you will be saved. Cry out to the Living God and ask for forgiveness through His Son, Jesus Christ. You can't be saved from the wrath of Gob by any of your own actions. Only by the death, burial and resurection of Jesus. Ask Him to save you and He will.
